Southworth Woodland, Location Map

This stand condition was artificially induced by the initiation of a maple syrup production management program in which all trees but sugar maples were removed.

Open from dawn until dusk.

  • Woodlot surrounded by chain link fence.

Parking

Features

  • Area: 18.5 acres
  • Almost pure sugar maple stand with an open understory.
  • Small knoll within woodlot dominated by large colony of Dutchman’s breeches in early spring.
  • Abundant herbaceous species include spring beauty, toothwort, bedstraw, bellwort, and wood anemone.
  • Eastern third of woodlot is fenced off; contains pond and is heavily grazed, but with a persistence of spring flora.
  • Contains some poorly developed trails.
